Arcata Wharf. Photograph by A. W. Ericson circa 1893. The Arcata Wharf claims California's first railroad (1855) which extended from the southwest corner of the Plaza out two miles to the Bay. The rail was first made of wood with a horse drawn car, then later becoming iron and steam powered.
