About the Artist

Michael Hayes was born and raised within the two worlds of Humboldt County and the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended The Art Academy, San Francisco State University and then graduated from Sacramento State University as an art major. For two years Michael studied side by side with a master painter from Thailand. He painted five days a week, eight hours a day. This intensive training was a turning point for his career. He is now one of Humboldt County's most sought after art instructors, teaching techniques from a classic approach passed down from world-renowned masters such as Rembrandt, Velazquez, and Carravagio. Michael is a representational painter: "I prefer to paint from life... Painting is a formation of your reaction to life!"

Michael is truly a gifted artist (with collectors of his work found world wide) and enjoys sharing his knowledge through teaching. He begins by encouraging his students to become more aware... "It is important to understand that perception and reality are different; to paint well, one must see beyond individual objects to their relationship with one another; nothing is separate, it's all connected. When the harmony is right, the movement from one object to another creates an experience beyond any one thing. It’s all about relationships," says Michael.

Michael has also established himself as a notable artist at the Princess Street Gallery in Harbour Island, Bahamas where he spends a few months each year painting the people and landscapes of the island. The rest of the time you'll find him in his Eureka studio or along the cliffs of Trinidad.

Artist's Statement

"Painting is a form of meditation. It is something I felt destined to do and it provides for a good life; it intensifies everything I enjoy including a fine cigar, a very dry martini, rich food and good wine... I am fortunate to be doing what I love to do!"
