About the Artist
Joseph Wilhelm photographs the twenty-first century landscape. Often,
the land is used; it is less than pristine with indigenous, historic,
and modern remains serving as indicators of human activity. His
photographs are revealing without overtly stating significance. There
is a quiet beauty in their subtlety.
Joseph has been photographing with intent since 1987 and has been most
influenced by the photographers associated with the New Topographics
of the 1970's. In 1992 Joseph earned a Master's Degree in Art from
Humboldt State University. In 2001, Joseph began using a traditional
view camera with a Better Light scanning back for his documentary project
Communicating Culture. This continues to be his preferred camera system.
The resolution and process suits his photographic eye and lends
itself to large exquisitely detailed prints.
