About the Artist
Alan Sanborn grew up in New England and the Maritime provinces in the
1950's. The coastal landscape of the Atlantic North East continues
to have significant influence on his painting and he continues to
return as often as possible. Many of Alan's landscapes now focus
on the very north coast of California where he lives. "In both
places," he says, "I fall easily into nostalgia, and feel as though
I'm painting all of the small moments that should, in themselves,
be enough to satisfy us." Alan's paintings often capture that fleeting
quality of light that makes every place special.
Alan Sanborn has taught art at Humboldt State University, College of
the Redwoods, The Ink People Center for the Arts and has been an
Artist in Residence through the California Arts Council. His work is
exhibited in several galleries throughout the U.S.
Artist's Statement
"Talent, discipline, craft, inspiration, vision - they so seldom come
together at the same time. Hoping that they will coincide beautifully
at times, I keep working at the only two variables I can control -
craft and discipline. I used to know what it was I was trying to do.
Now I just try and paint - it's the only way I learn about painting.
It often boils down to a rhythm that I feel at home with.
I'm a straightforward, no special effects, watercolorist. My style?
Like everyone, I try and I've tried to paint like those I most admire,
sometimes my own students. Boy do I see a lot I like in other people's
paintings. But I hold a brush differently, I see color differently.
My style is, probably, how much myself gets in the way of lessons
I can't quite learn."
