About the Artist
Vaughn has been actively photographing for 30 years. After graduating
from Humboldt State University with a BS in Natural Resources Management,
he worked 12 years as a mule packer, wilderness ranger, and firefighter
for the US Forest Service. This experience grew his deep affection
for both wilderness and photography. During the off-season, Vaughn
assisted at Friends of Photography workshops and perfected his craft
as a landscape photographer. He returned to Humboldt State University
in 1991 to work as the darkroom technician where he manages the teaching
darkroom for HSU's Art Department.
Vaughn produces most of his work as either Carbon or Platinum/Palladium
prints. These 19th century processes are known for exceptional tonal
range and durability. Vaughn mixes his own coatings and applies by
hand to archival paper. He then contact prints his 8x10 or 5x7
negatives as limited editions.
Most of Vaughn's photographs are taken in Prairie Creek Redwoods State
Park, especially along Prairie Creek itself, just 50 miles from his
home. He is especially drawn to the filtered light within centuries
old redwood forests.
Artist's Statement
"I photograph as a way to teach myself how to better See. I do no
cropping, dodging nor other darkroom tricks... this forces me to see
more intensely, to find and recognize the forms light creates in the
landscape. My prints are my way of sharing what I have learned."
