About the Artist
Michael Harris is the son of a university professor of ornithology
and together they spent their summers traveling throughout North America
and various foreign regions. These adventures revealed a broad and
varied world that led him to photographically record his experiences.
In 1977 he took a workshop in Yosemite with Ansel Adams, Morley Baer,
Yousuf Karsh and other noted photographic artists. His association
with these historic figures boosted his confidence and encouraged his
career. Michael's photographic process continues to be an exploration
of the world around him and serves to develop his intimate way of
seeing the world.
Michael is dedicated to the continuation of traditional black and white
photography. He photographs with 4x5 or 6x9 film, prints his work
on fiber based silver gelatin paper, and adds to their archival quality
with selenium toning.
Michael's work has been widely shown in the Northern Californian region
that is his home, he has received numerous awards in juried exhibits,
and has been published in Photographer's Forum magazine.
Artist's Statement
"Photographs have the most meaning when they express the union between
a photographer's intuitive emotional response and the subject. This
allows the image to be more about what is behind the camera than the
scene in front of the photographer.
My hope as a photographer is that the viewer can grow along with me
as I endeavor to explore what is universal in all things."
